April 2025 Gigs – Reviews & Photos

9th – John Maddocks Jazzmen

REVIEWS:
Julia Hubery & Mark Willis: “The off-the-chart fabulessity, combined with energy, commitment and quality of the band made me smile all night. Especially loved Froggy More Rag, the sinuous, snaky Last Smile Blues, Perdido Street Blues, Washboard Wiggles, also a great New Orleans Shuffle. Loved Chris’s superbly sincere singing. A great night, thank you so very, very much.”
Dean & Mary: “Great music. Very entertaining, (especially when the pianist inadvertently had the transpose key pressed!)”
Roger & Lesley: ”Another great evening from John Maddocks Jazzmen. They never fail to provide entertainment.”
Gary & Malcolm: ”A good evening listening to very good musicians. Lots of energy and unusual numbers we rarely hear. Superb entertainment. First visit by Bill Gyford on banjo.”
Trish & Barry: “Good old trad jazz played with vim, vigour and va va vroom.”
Maureen & John Carter: “A couple of personnel changes since the last visit by this very popular south coast band.  Excellent performance right from the off. A superb evening’s entertainment.”
Gwyn, Gill & John: “Great to have this band back playing pure traditional jazz. Hope the come back soon.”

23rd – Kevin Grenfell’s Jazz Giants

REVIEWS:
Julia Hubery & Mark Willis: “Thanks so much for: an evening of fantastic energy & commitment: one of the best trombonists we hear; wonderful trumpet and great moments of the ‘windys’ playing off each other; a fantastic rhythm from double bass and drums to love.”
Phil, John, Tony & Phil: ”Really good nought.  Great humour.  Great entertainment.  Chris is quite good as well!”
Tony Baily: “always a 5-star show.  Come back soon.  Great band.”
Jan, Veronica, Paul & Bob: “As usual, a great band of musicians.  Very entertaining and keeping the audience amused at the same time.”
Tim & Andrew: “Brilliant as always.  Even the pianist was on form”!
Rita & John Porter: “A great evening of great music.  Great vocals.  Enjoyed the gig very much.”
Jim & Margaret Bevington: “Superb entertainment as well as great music.”
Maureen & John Carter: “With the sad, untimely loss of Jeremy Huggett, Kevin has changed the sound of the band by replacing him with a trumpet player.  What hasn’t changed is the exciting style, mainly down to Jules on drums.”
